PL-Primalingua-Wir sprechen Europäisch

Soros International House has joined new partnership in the international Lifelong Learning programme project "Primalingua-Wir sprechen Europäisch". German partners coordinate the project.

The idea.

The idea of the project Primalingua is, to establish a school network all over Europe for pupils at the age between 8 and 12, to communicate with each other by using the common foreign language. It was English, French, Spanish, that are mostly taught at school.

The project partners will develop an internet-platform, where the network schools can communicate.

Innovation.

Primalingua is a project to teach children how to deal with modern mediums and at the same time to get in touch with foreign languages and cultures.

Project-Tasks

a.Coordinators for the schools.

Four project partners will coordinate the following regions: Southern Europe with Italy, Spain, Portugal and Greece, Western Europe with Belgium, The Netherlands, Luxembourg, France, Great Britain and Ireland, Northern Europe with Scandinavia and Iceland and Eastern Europe with the new European countries Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia. These coordinators will be responsible to find the network-school partners in as most different regions as possible.

Soros International House will coordinate Eastern Europe region. There will be 6 schools involved from Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia:

ENGLISH LANGUAGE:
  • PRIVATE SCHOOL INNOVA (Riga, Latvia)
  • IH Tallinn (Tallinn, Estonia)
  • Švėkšna "Saulės" secondary school (Šilutė district, Lithuania)
  • Širvintos "Atžalyno" basic school (Širvintos, Lithuania)
FRENCH LANGUAGE:
  • Vilnius "Jono Basanavičiaus" secondary school (Vilnius, Lithuania)
GERMAN LANGUAGE:
  • "Filaretų" primary school (Vilnius, Lithuania)

b.Building an Internetplatform/manual for teachers.

Other four project partners will be experts in media education. It will be up to them, to develop the internet platform with several tasks for the pupils based on photography, film, audio, graphic/design.

The tasks will very schematized, so they will be easy to handle for teachers and pupils. The instructions will be given in German, English, French and Spain, the languages that are mostly learned by pupils at this age. That way, Greece pupils for example can learn something about Finish pupils, by using their common first foreign language English.

c.The partner schools create the multimedia profiles

With the given tasks the primalingua-schools create their profiles and put them on the platform. There, they can communicate with other schools-in a common foreign language, or in a language, which is foreign language for one school, but mother tongue for the other.

The final Project Partners Meeting in Taormina,  2009 October

On October 14 - 17th the final Lifelong Learning program project "Primalingua-Wir sprechen Europäisch“partner meeting took place in Taormina (Italy). The subject of the meeting was the evaluation of the whole project period (two years) activities and the future of the designed project platform. Soros International was represented by director Daiva Malinauskiene. She introduced the Baltic States schools that took part in the project, their feedback on project activities. The presentations prepared by all the partners showed that children across Europe (57 schools from different European countries were involved in the project) are open to other cultures and understand that the knowledge of a foreign language is an important communication tool. As well their reports showed that children understand how important it is to introduce their culture, daily life habits and customs to others, to find differences and similarities with their peers in other countries, keeping to their identity on the one hand, and realising the fact that they belong to one large community (called the European Union) on the other hand. The responses of the main target groups, namely children, were in line with the project objectives.

Achievements of project activity, 2008 December

The teachers and their schoolchilden from the schools that are participating in the project got actively involved in its activities. With the given tasks they have already created the profiles of their schools as well as their personal profiles, described Christmas traditions in their country and included the recipes of the Christmas cookies typical for their region.

They not only communicate virtually in a common foreign language, but draw postcards, prepare Christmas presents and send them to their virtual friends in different European countries. As teacher Rita from Sirvintai school said the children who are involved in the project show proudly to their classmates the countries on the Primalingua map where they have already obtained new friends.
