seminar "Intercultural Learning: How to Run an Effective Adult Learning Week "

MAIN GOAL OF THE COURSE WAS:

Establishment of better European partnership among adult educators and the attainment of equality within the European dimension by means of intercultural learning.

TASKS OF THE COURSE WERE:

  • To share and learn from each country‘s experiences in running adult learning weeks; to discuss and reflect upon how these weeks help build the local community and international connections, and how this, in turn, works to prevent and decrease social exclusion.
  • To acquaint adult educators from other European Union members and candidate members with the Lithuanian adult learners‘ week, the structuring of the adult education system within Lithuania and Lithuanian adult education institutions.

METHODOLOGY:

Adult learners‘ week 2002, initiated by the Lithuanian Association of Adult Education (LAAE), was the third annual event of this kind, the first week took place in 2000 and was dedicated to general issues of adult education. The second week (2001) concentrated on the year of languages, i.e. was more specific and aimed at narrower goals. Due to the discussions on the lifelong learning memorandum, which were organized in May-June, 2001 the week gave an opportunity to those engaged in adult education to share problems and achievements. The week has become a tradition and an event adult learners look forward to.
The third adult learners‘ week in 2002 was focused on addressing problems in learning/teaching within socially-excluded groups. The LAAE called for public discussion of the problem, claiming that only joint action by the state and society can be effective in diagnosing both the causes of the problem, and the remedies. Many different activities during adult learning week were introduced to draw the attention of, inform and involve the public in productive analitical dialogue concerning the problems of learning/teaching within socially-excluded groups. Visiting and local adult educators had an opportunity to share their experiences and insights over the course of their active participation.
  • Regional seminars helped to present and discuss the results of the reseach concerning socially-excluded groups, with further educational opportunuties held at individual and cooperating institutions. Events included "open doors" days, round-table discussions, meetings with regional and local authorities, cultural days/celebrations, and the education of ethnic minorities. Also, radio and television broadcasting to raise awareness of the situation concerning socially-excluded groups and adult education.
  • A one day video-conferences to summarise and consolidate what has been achieved and learned over the course of adult learners‘ week. Presentation of Lithuanian adult educators 10-year experience locally and internationally.
Events and activities that took place throughout Lithuania in adult learners‘ week :
    • Acquaintance with the Lithuanian adult education structure and the activity of the Lithuanian Association of Adult Education
    • Presentation of visiting country members‘ experience in running adult learners‘ week
    • Discussion of how language-learning promotes European citizenship and intercultural learning (adult education institutions‘ exhibition at Vilnius Technical Library, round-table discussion at Soros International House)
    • Presentation and analysis of research on socially-excluded groups within member countries and Vilnius region
    • Acquaintance with and discussion of how the labour market addresses the problem of social exclusion (seminar at Lithuanian Association of Adult Education Regional Information Centre, Vilnius, round-table discussion at Vilnius Labour Market Training
    • Acquaintance with how artisanship and folk art activities help rehabilitate the socially-excluded
    • Acquaintance with, and discussion of how the activities of community centres re-integrate the socially-excluded back into the society ("open door" day at the estate academy of Rumsiskes Museum, discussion with Kulautuva community members)
    • Presentation of Lithuanian adult educators‘ 10-year experience locally and internationally: the creation of an effective and influental structure of formal and non-formal adult education that fosters life-long learning and continues to make a positive impact at regional and state level
    • Evaluation and conclusions on research of socially-excluded groups within different communities: sharing effective strategies
    • Kaunas technological dissemination of the Grundtvig program ideas (video conference at university distance learning centre)
    • Discussion of how to integrate new ideas and strategies within each country‘s individual context
    • Incorporating a plan of sustainability: how this intercultural learning experience will positively effect future and current activities of grundtvig program and its projects, and partnership between different European countries.

  • The final event of the seminar was the dissemination of Grundtvig ideas. Presentations were made by the participants about their experiences within their own countries in running adult learners‘ week; about the Grundtvig program itself, and how intercultural learning, partnership, and the sharing of experience facilitates the achievement of the goals of European citizenship and presence in the European dimension, and about what they learned over the course of intercultural learning in Lithuania. Current Grundtvig 1, 2 and 3 program projects within Lithuania were presented to encourage adult educators‘ participation in the Grundtvig program.

The participants of the seminar were people working in the institutions connected with adult education in different European countries: Spain, Latvia, Finland, Germany and Lithuania. In order to summarize the outcomes of the event and to estimate the achieved success, it is very important to hear the impressions of our guests from abroad.Their thoughts and impressions about the visit in Lithuania, as well as the benefits they claim to have gained here prove this seminar to have successfully realised its aims. Moreover, this seminar added to a positive image of Lithuania in European context:
Elfa, Finland: "In the course of this event I found many new acquaintances as well as potential partners for the European projects in the future. Even now, when the visit is coming to an end, we are starting to work on a project, the partners of which are going to be Lithuania, Latvia, Spain, Finland and Germany."
Doris, Germany: "Now I can say that I know what Lithuania is like, how adult education and language teaching are organised and conducted by adult educators here. As to running an effective adult education week, Lithuania, to my mind has a very well developed system as well as necessary coordination skills in doing this. This seminar will bridge the experiences of Lithuania and Germany. In case I would need to find an insitution to work with in the Eastern Europe in the future, I will especially have Lithuania in mind."
Jonathan, Spain: "I truly admire Lithuanians as a nation, and their long way of fighting for the independence of their country. I wish Lithuanians to maintain this national trait, which signifies their strong cultural identity and helps to resist the influence of other, much bigger nations. Please keep in mind, that it is important for those smaller nations to maintain their pride even being part of some large organisations and communities. I will have a lot of things to tell to my colleagues in Spain about the experience of Lithuanian adult educators and educators from other countries whom I met here. We can really learn a lot through sharing our experiences. This seminar is a really good example of successful intercultural learning.

NOVELTY!
