„Art remains the one way possible of speaking truth“ /Robert Browning/ Public Spaces +Visual Arts = Civic Actions Grundtvig Workshop Vilnius, Lithuania May 16-22, 2010 Soros International House organized Grundtvig workshop „Open Spaces + Visual Arts = Civic Actions“, which was attended by adult learners from 12 European countries: Hungary, Italy, Latvia, Finland, the Netherlands, Cyprus, Belgium, Bulgaria, Romania, Turkey, Poland, Belarus and Lithuania. During the first day of the seminar guests introduced their best practices of participation in civic actions, shared their experiences. During the next two days, participants generated ideas for future civic actions, worked on scripts, produced visual materials.
19 May in the afternoon, all workshop participants split into groups and organized civic actions in three selected open spaces in Vilnius. In Lukiškių square the place of the former communist party leader was occupied by a snowman – a symbol of manifestation for foolishness. Two other actions were organized in Zemaites square: by sounding the square, workshop participants wanted to revive the place and turn it into a space for reading. Fontane, located next to the Opera and Ballet Theater was the third location for civic actions. Bubble bistro organizers invited passers-bys to visit the cafe and to discuss and reflect on the role of water in our lives.
The workshop participants not only organized civil actions, but also met with prominent civic activists in Lithuania, visited the artists‘ workshops, went sightseeing in Vilnius.
It was a very productive workshop, which developed the materials for the final product DVD, which will include examples of best practices, comments and reflections by workshop participants, scenarios of the civic actions, run in Vilnius and guidelines how to run such actions, etc. It will be disseminated among civic activists and adult educators.
